Bernard is Dode’s Warden of Lore: the keeper of its stories, its digital hearth, and the many small workings that keep the village alive in the modern world. From shaping the website and tending to all things technical, to helping with practical tasks that come with caring for an almost thousand‑year‑old place.
Not long ago Bernard introduced a marvel so wondrous it would surely have been declared sorcery in the 12th century. With great care he has woven invisible threads of “Wi‑Fi” across the grounds — a kind of arcane ether that allows messages to travel faster than any horse could gallop. Some say he captured lightning in a box. Others whisper he made a pact with the spirits of the hills. Whatever the truth, guests now enjoy the rare luxury of ancient tranquillity paired with modern connection.

Bernard lends his guardianship beyond Dode’s boundaries, playing a vital role in supporting our sister church, St Benedict’s in Paddlesworth. He retraced the path that William, the last priest of Dode, is believed to have taken when the village was abandoned after the Black Death. From this he crafted a circular walk that now links the two ancient sites once more. Each May, Bernard leads the annual pilgrimage along this historic route, guiding visitors in William’s footsteps — and never missing the chance to don a bit of ceremonial finery for the occasion. In doing so, he keeps the old stories alive, ensuring that the journey between Dode and Paddlesworth remains a living tradition rather than a forgotten tale.
